OPAG 2006 Lester Caplan Award

In addition to Dr. William Pierre’s tremendous work as a clinical Optometrist and Chief of Optometry, Dr. Pierre has contributed greatly to the IHS Optometry Program through his tireless efforts as the IHS Tribal Optometry Representative. Dr. Pierre is often the first contact for many prospective Optometrists interested in 638 Tribal Optometry positions, and through his efforts, many optometrists have chosen IHS Optometry as their profession. Dr. Pierre has been instrumental in reaching out to the other optometrists who are hired directly under 638 tribal programs. By encouraging and welcoming them into our IHS Optometry activities, he has helped new tribal optometrists adjust to their new surroundings. His efforts helps to keep these optometrists connected with the other IHS optometrists, and aids in keeping them informed of IHS Optometry activities and information.

Dr. Pierre has attended a National Indian Health Board, which was instrumental in keeping the Board informed about the IHS Optometry program, and to let them know of our expertise in eye care delivery. His contribution also allowed them to bring their thoughts and ideas to us, which resulted in improved communication, and ultimately improved eye care.

Dr. Pierre stepped up to take on these tasks when no one else in tribal programs was willing to come forward. Dr. Pierre is very well spoken, he presents himself very well, and he represents IHS Optometry professionally.

Dr. Pierre helped several other tribal optometrists negotiate with their respective tribal programs. This mentorship was instrumental in keeping these optometrists in the IHS.

Dr. Pierre is very active in his local tribal program through his participation in Peer Review Committee and Diabetes Committee. He also is active in volunteer work through the VOSH program. In addition, he is the Northeast WI Optometric Society President, he is co-chair of the Diabetes Committee at the Oneida Health Center, he is active on the Green Bay Prevent Blindness Committee, and he is on the Forest County Tobacco Abuse Coalition.

Dr. Pierre has served admirably as a Deputy Chief Clinical Consultant under Dr. Richard Hatch, and he continues to serve the IHS Optometry Program as the at-large representative to the Eye Care Coordination Committee member. Dr. Pierre is a true professional and an outstanding contributor to IHS Optometry, and he is well-deserving of this award.
