2007 Excellence in Healthcare Leadership Award
CAPT Peter Delany, PhD, is the Program Director for Health
Services Research in the Division of Treatment & Recovery Research
at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, (NIAAA),
National Institutes of Health (NIH). He has also served as a Senior
Health Analyst with the Office of Applied Studies at Substance Abuse
and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Deputy
Director of the Division of Epidemiology, Services, and Prevention
Research at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), NIH and was
a collaborating scientist on the National Criminal Justice Drug
Abuse Treatment Studies Program Cooperative. Dr. Delany received his
undergraduate education from the University of Maryland at College
Park and his Masters and Doctorate in Social Work from The Catholic
University of America in Washington, D.C. where he holds an adjunct
faculty position at the National Catholic School of Social Work.
Health Service Officer (HSO) Peter Delany is receiving the
Excellence in Healthcare Leadership Award in recognition of his
exemplary leadership and exceptional accomplishments in the design
and administration of public health research programs to improve
services to the more than 5.5 million substance abusers and their
families across the Nation. During his almost 15 year Public Health
Service (PHS) career CAPT Delany has helped to implement a number of
innovative research programs of national significance addressing key
priorities in substance abuse treatment including the treatment of
criminal justice involved populations, treatment adherence with HIV
positive individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance
abuse disorders, and enhancing the research infrastructure in
schools of social work. He has also been a visible part of the
Commissioned Corps through his membership on a number of advisory
committees and response teams.
